Emergency Surgery. No Health Insurance. What Do You Do?
This just happened to Jason Stein.

Many of you know Jason Stein as the handstand guy — more often than not, he’s over in a corner of the room, upside-down on his hands.
He’s been a member of the gym since fall 2007, and over that time has become a friend and member of the community.
Well, he and his family have recently suffered a catastrophic health hit. What he thought was a ruptured Achilles turned out to be a severe heelbone fracture.
He checked himself into the ER for urgent surgery in order to prevent skin and bone death, as well as infection and possible amputation.
Jason teaches yoga full-time and is currently without insurance. He and his wife are also expecting their second child in January 2013.
Surgery, one night in the hospital, and the bill is already $20,000. That doesn’t include the doctor, the radiologist, the anesthesiologist, the x-rays and scans, any testing, etc.
We are having a CFPDX fundraiser to raise significant monies for Jason. Our goal is at least $5000. CFPDX will be matching the first $2000 in donations.
I have faith that the strong CFPDX community will turn words into action and donations.
Donations start at $25 and increase in increments of $25. Donate on our site here. Remember, CFPDX will be matching the first $2000 in donations.
Use bank draw/EFT/ACH if you can. Write us a check if you want. VISA does not need the 3%.
Kickball and Potluck for Stein Family
We will be having a summer park party for Jason Stein and family. Kickball, grillin beef flanken ribs, potluck, and writing silly stuff on his cast.

August 26th, Sunday, Noon.

RSVP for free online here so we know many beef ribs to get.
This is a Pot luck so please bring a dish to share.

Glad you are ok Jason, I guess it could have been alot worse. My heart went out to you guys when I heard about the cost. We are here to help, looking forward to the picnic.
Thanks so much you guys.
It was a total freak break, and went from serious to worse.
When I first thought it was an Achilles rupture, I shopped around to find an orthopedic surgeon and prepared to suck up the $6K cash cost of surgery.
At the first consult, though, the orthopod threw out the word ‘amputation’ and told me to get to an ER or risk infection and possibly losing my foot!
Thanks to XX, Scott and Rochelle at the gym. The place is like extended family to me, and in turn I feel like Portland is truly a special place here in the US, where there is a true sense of community.

Bummer to hear about your ankle, and sorry to have missed your classes all summer. At least with Yoga I hope you will be able to teach without having to get into poses. We’ll be back in town on the 24th and I look forward to your potluck and fundraiser. Congratulations on the pregnancy; kids are great fun, even if they leave us poor and always slightly worried.
