About Karina
Karina Brown grew up in the forests and wetlands of the Pacific Northwest. In addition to a lifelong interest in plants and about 15 years of self-study, she has spent several years studying with Portland-area plant teachers. She has completed year-long courses at The School of Forest Medicine, The School of Traditional Western Herbal Medicine and The Arctos School of Botanical Medicine, and has studied with the Columbines School of Botanical Studies.
Plants have been used for healing for as long as humans have been interacting with the green world. We have a body of knowledge about the powerful healing qualities of plants that has been handed down for centuries.
What she love about herbs is it is a system of gentle, yet effective medicine that can help not only during sickness, but also bring healthy bodies into more balance and even greater health and wellbeing.
Plant medicine is equally adept at aiding when you’re sick or in crisis, as well as addressing symptoms that may not be identifiable as an issue. So herbs help with big challenges like recovery from surgery, and also excel at addressing little nagging things like recurring gas, dry skin or trouble sleeping.
Why would you care about little things like that? Our body’s alarm system is set to go off when there is a problem. This is the body’s way of saying “I have an imbalance.” If left untreated, this imbalance may lead to a larger issue.
Take digestion, for example. Seemingly minor/normal reactions to food like constant gas or burping, gurgling stomach and heartburn are all symptoms of larger imbalance. Digestion should go on without notice, except, at the very beginning when food is being consumed and the very end when food is being eliminated. Digestion is just moving along quietly in the background, without pain, annoyance or embarrassment.
Because herbs work gently by shifting patterns, they are teaching the body to learn to balance itself.
