Tami Continues Killing 10K Time

1 Nov

Gym member Tami was a little nervous about sharing her most recent race results because she worried people would think she was on the site too much…

Unfortunately, she keeps shaving ridiculous chunks of time off her results! Congratulations on the improved times and on winning your age group (40-49), Tami! Good luck on your upcoming races!

Recently, Tami also pleasantly surprised herself wardrobe wise…her posterior chain is a size 2!

She was also gracious enough to share her tips on improving and enjoying her running, so read on.

“As of the week of October 3, my 10k PR is now 54:13 (an 8:45/mile pace).

If you remember, I started off the year running 5ks with a 10-minute/mile pace — and that was totally pushing it for me (like near-death pushing it).

I have steadily shaved seconds off my 5k time, so I started signing up for 10k’s instead.

While running 10k’s, I stayed at about 56:00 minutes (9-minute/mile pace) for several weeks, and then last week I had a breakthrough, completely out of the blue. I PR’d at 54:13 and won my age group (Female 40 to 49, although it was a small race of 245 participants).

I have three more 10k’s over the next month, and then I have four 5k’s scheduled in November and December. I’m kind of excited to see how the improvement in my 10k speed translates back to a 5k (my best 5k pace is currently 8:40 per mile).

Three of the biggest things that have helped me:

1. I made up my mind to improve, so I set goals and pushed myself to run.

2. Working on my form and cadence has been a godsend (thanks Madoc!), because I’m running more efficiently (wasting less energy … ’cause god knows I need ALL of it).

3. The added mini-running drills inserted into our weekly CF WODs have helped me with my speed work. I like that I don’t have to do a bunch of extra stuff; it’s built into the CF classes I’m already taking.

I mentioned this to XX the other day … I was going through my closet to get rid of clothes that I no longer wear.

Several pair of size-2 slacks were in the pile (I wear a comfortable size 4), so I thought I’d try them on just for laughs. I’ll be damned … they fit.

I’m not losing weight, but everything continues to tighten up and slim down.

I firmly believe that the running (in addition to CF) is the biggest contributing factor. I’ve never gotten this kind of result just by running, though. It’s definitely the combo of doing both.”

Don’t forget, if you want to up your running game, you can always contact Crossfit Portland’s Pose Running expert Madoc Yng-Wong to set up a consult or get private lessons. Email him at runyng@gmail.com

Madoc will also be hosting informational meetings for a CrossFit Portland Endurance Team, November 5 & 6 at 11:00 a.m.
