American Kettlebell Club

Hey everyone! I hope you are having a great weekend and the weather held up for the Cleveland HS Track Day. Who drank a Hopworks El Diablo for me? Thanks for taking that carb bullet for me buddy, I owe you one.

So, Scott and I are at the American Kettlebell Club certification up here in Bellingham, WA. The AKC stresses technique, efficiency, and teaches “belling” methods that produce incredible results for competitors and general belling enthusiasts. Their kettlebells are incredible and the best we have ever used. CrossFit Portland is in for a special treat when our AKC competition bells arrive :)

April Gains

We just had a recent flurry of personal bests in the last 24 hours and I want to acknowledge their awesome achievements.

Jessica hit a PR of 32 straight pull ups!!! This is without specifically working on them, haven’t done pull ups probably more than 3 times in the last month, and a previous PR of 16. Even more impressive is she has been able to shorten her kip and reduce her swing time on the bar, increasing her power output. Nice!

Garry started coming to us in the New Year and has been amazing to watch. No false grip controlled muscle up?! He just hit a PR of 30 straight pull ups as well. It is his first attempt at max pullups and we can’t wait to see where he goes from here. 50 will be the new 30 around here before you know it :)

Matt’s been hitting the pull ups hard, trying to get his kip smoothed. Well, the workout was max pull ups for 4 sets and he started out a little slow. 3rd set comes around and the wheels clicked on! Matt busts out 16 straight.

We had some big deadlift PR’s this morning from the ladies and Anton. Anton’s goal has been to get double body weight on the deadlift and he has been working the strength cycle for the past few weeks, getting stronger and approaching the milestone. He attempted this morning and broke on through with a 320 lift. Katie picked up 200 and Michelle, first time maxing out on DL, pulled up 175. 2 x BW is coming real soon for the ladies!

Finally, I like to personally thank everyone, especially all the new members, who have made the last few weeks so high energy and fun to teach! Keep up the hard sweating and your new PRs will be exciting to see.

Pony Boy is Back

Aaron, aka Pony Boy, made his triumphant return to teaching the 11:00 am class today. Aaron’s workouts always just make me a little nervous with anticipation which is great. You should have a little bit of nervous anticipation of the workout…you’ll be more engaged and reap more benefits. Today, it was innocent looking on the surface but once you got into it, it got into you.

Every movement was intentionally uneven, forcing your body to apply multiple levels of force concurrently on both sides of the body. Very stimulating for all involved, especially James since it was his first workout.

Going for it

I’ve been absent from class this week and I am missing the action already. I can’t wait to get back into the groove and seeing everyone again! I managed to sneak in for a little workout and attempted to PR in overhead squats which for me is bodyweight. I did OHS for the first time last April when I started CrossFitting and my PR was 135 back then. It has quickly improved but I have been just shy of bodyweight. Today, I was feeling it though!

Cleveland High School Track on Saturday

The Cleveland HS Track & Field experienced a facelift last year with their new artificial field turf. April 19th, Saturday 12:00 Fundamentals and 12:30 pm class will be at the Cleveland High School Track. We are at a track so can you guess part of the workout? BRING WATER!

Post work-out, we’ll checkout Hopworks Urban Brewery just down the street! If its pouring down rain, Hopworks will just commence earlier.

Remember, no evening class on Friday, April 18th. Mandatory rest day for all :)
