How were you introduced to Crossfit?
I first heard about it in 2006 from an Ultimate Frisbee teammate of mine back in Illinois. We were chatting about coaching and he mentioned this new exercise
program called CrossFit. I looked it up and was intrigued but didn’t see any “sport specific” training in there so I ignored it. In April of 2007, I was so bored with working out at the gym, I decided to look up CrossFit again. Gave Scott a call and tried out a class and loved it! It had everything I was missing – a team atmosphere, new challenges everyday, learning explosive lifting and gymnastic movements that I have always been unable to do, and a great coach to guide me.
I had never joined a gym up to that point. When Scott told me the monthly price, I was taken back by it because I’ve always trained for “free”. I decided what the heck and gave it a shot. After a month, I was writing Scott another check (this is before our Mindbody system) and thinking what an amazing deal this was. The value in attention, education, and direction at CrossFit Portland was worth way more to me than what it said on that check.
When I first started, and Jess shortly after, the community was much smaller and we got to know each other really well. It is a quality of a CrossFit gym that is lost in translation when I describe it to people who don’t know what CrossFit is. It is the character of the gym and is just as important as the education and attention the coaches gave to the members. The character of CrossFit Portland fit me very well.
Favorite WOD/Lift:
My favorite WODs are the ones that I haven’t done. The “mystery” of each one appeals to me. I also like WODS that I’m not good at it…and I’m not good at a lot of them! So, I guess the next WOD I do is my favorite one.
My favorite lift is the snatch. It is a thrilling experience of intensity and guts. The more I have practiced it, the more it has become a skill-oriented lift for me. I tend to gravitate towards skill oriented activities more so than brute force.

I have always wanted to
Run my own business – it is incredible that it just so happens to be connected with fitness as well!
1 word people use to describe me
intense
Outside of the gym I like to
1) Eat at restaurants where price, quality, and quantity align perfectly together. *Sigh*…it is a rare treat.
2) Aggravate Jess
Something nobody knows about me or would be surprised to learn
I LOVE sparring with telemarketers and corporate customer “care” personnel. You know how some people describe feeling “just right” by snuggling up with a warm blanket, a hot cup of coffee, and a good book? I get that same fuzzy feeling when a telemarketer calls me at CrossFit. Some of the persuasive guilt-language strategies they employ is just shocking and cracks me up.
I also get a kick out of calling corporate customer service departments to get mistakes fixed or fenaggling their system against them. I can understand why people just hate doing this and it just makes them angry to even call. I get pumped up every time I got to do it!

Favorite physical activity outside of crossfit
Ultimate Frisbee. After high school football, I found this sport in college and played it all throughout college. I traveled to tournaments around the country and my teammates are some of best friends to this day.
Favorite place to eat in portland
Podnahs BBQ, Korean BBQ, La Bonita, La Superior, Tuk Tuk, Chaba Thai, Shenzhen
I basically follow this website called meateats.com Seems like they know where I can get a good meaty meal for the right dollar.
Song that gets me pumped up for a workout
When I first joined, there was no music at the Academy of Kung Fu. We filled that void with some inspirational banter. Then Cheema showed up and we didn’t need banter or music. I still enjoy a non-music gym and just the quiet environment. Hearing weights drop, people breathing, and chatting have a certain appeal to me.
However, if I had to listen to something, I do like me some Journey, Michael Jackson, and this particular song from Heart - here is a sample in action.
Proudest accomplishment
In my last year of college Ultimate, making it to Nationals with the Illinois mens Ultimate team by getting the Michigan monkey off our back and beating them in the game to go. Taking a chance, leaving my steady job at the time in Portland, and working at CrossFit Portland. Asking Jess to marry me at PDX International and having the fortune that both her parents were there to witness it – instantaneous infinite life points with the in-laws.
