My self control seems to be directly related to my stress levels (stress high, paleo compliance lower). From what I have read this seems to make sense and is a biological reaction to stress. I recently went through a month were things at work were crazy. I found it very hard to resist the constant cookies, treats, and other bad food that is always around the office. I also have a weakness for sweet drinks in the afternoon after my will power starts to run low. My paleo compliance took a dive and now I'm finding it harder to get back on track than it was to go paleo orginally. Unfortunately I don't seem to have much reaction to grains or sugar so thinking about how yucky it will make me feel doesn't really seem to work.

-Can anybody explain or post links to why high stress leads to sugar cravings?
-Any suggestions on how stay compliant with paleo during periods of higher stress?
-How do I completely kick the sweet drink (typically soda) addiction?

Hi Sara,

On Amazon, the best price for fish oil is the Carlson's Brand and it comes in pill form. Search for Carlsons Fish Oil, you are looking for CArlsons Super Omega 3 pills. 1 pill has 500 mg of EPA/DHA combined, the particularly good stuff you are looking for. Some other companies promise lots of oil but very little of EPA/DHA and is just filler. You get 120+30 pills for each purchase. Until proven otherwise, Carlsons is a reputable brand of fish oil as well.

Hi folks,
I'm new here to the crossfit discussion forum, and have not personally participated in Crossfit Portland yet, though I'm interested in trying it out. I'm also hoping to find like-minded people for mutual support in an informal spirit, here in Southeast Portland, for adopting "paleo diet," "Primal Blueprint" kinds of approaches to daily living. I've scheduled an event on meetup.com for Sat May 15, 330pm, at the People's Co-op, 3021 SE 21st (SE 21st and Tibbetts), in the context of a talk I'm giving on trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils. The reason I find this topic very apropos and compelling is that it represents an extraordinary microcosm of the health challenges we face, and offers some important lessons (see http://trimetriders.org/hydrogenated for more info)

Many of us, by the way, are probably former vegetarians, who have become convinced, on the strength of our own research into these subjects, that vegetarianism is in no way a synonym for good health -- again, the story of partially hydrogenated vegetable oils helps illustrate the perils of such misconceptions!

I think there is a lot of potential convergence between people involved in Crossfit, paleo eating, the local and natural foods movements, and so on. It's an exciting phenomenon that I would like to see develop much further.

I was wondering where everyone gets their fish oil? I have switched from the pills to the lemon flavored oil and am finding that I am going through it rather quickly, and it is a little spendy. My cursory search on Amazon has not revealed massive savings, so I am wondering if there is somewhere to buy in bulk or at least a larger bottle?

For a veggie CSA, we have enjoyed Pumpkin Ridge. Also they offer meat through their affiliates from time to time. But for a bushel basket of veggies once a weak Pumpkin Ridge is cool. And they give recipes coordinated w/ each week's harvest.

Absolutely!!! I had migraines, stress and depression for 30+ years. in 2006, after all kids and teens were out on their own, all the sugars got tossed from the house. I knew I had issues with sugar, just never realized how bad. After the withdrawals dissappeared, I felt better. After a month, I realized I hadn't had any headaches!! After a few months, inches started falling off. Even tho I replaced the sugars with chips, I still lost weight. That is another story and 50 pounds ago.

Bottom line, when I commented to a friend who is a doctor, he said, "naturally!! Sugar is a toxin to the human body." Well, duh!! hahaha....

The younger, healthier people have strong enough bodies to counteract that toxin. But as we age, or if we just do not have a strong immune system, sugar is a killer.

Also, I heard or read that sugar tricks some chemical in the body to convert calories to fat. Doesn't matter if it is sugar calories, or some other calorie. Just the presense of sugar in our system, sets it to store as many calories as possible.

OMG-Crossfit Vancouver is on FOX 12 right now!

I have found an amazing bento place downtown that has grass-fed buffalo and LOTS of veggies for about $9. When I fail to bring my lunch, bento is my go-to, but it tends to be covered with sugary sauce and has only wilted veggies. I don't think this has any sauce, if so it is minimal and I can't tell, and the veggies are steamed, crisp, substantial, and a good variety (asparagus, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, cabbage, etc.) They do have several sauces you can add on yourself. Most of which I stay away from, but they do have a wheat-free soy sauce readily available.

It is called "James Bean cafe," and located near (and practically in) Bally's on SW 2nd and Taylor.

Hello fellow challengers,

Just wanted to share an experience I had over the past few days. Following the end of the challenge I took a trip to the coast and indulged in lots of beachy-type sweets including ice cream, caramels, beer, and (gasp) a slice of cheese pizza. I know. Stomachache aside, the effect that really shocked me was a huge dose of anxiety and insecurity that plagued me all weekend and is still lingering today (back on Paleo by the way). Now I consider myself a fairly self-confident person with low levels of anxiety so this really came out of left field and pretty much made me miserable. I checked with Scott this morning and he said it's very common for sugar (and perhaps other non-Paleo items) to cause this kind of psychological stress. Prior to going super-clean for the challenge I had not experienced this so acutely, just goes to show the real changes our bodies have made over the past 6 weeks.

Anyone else felt this? And came to the conclusion that it is so not worth it? Stress SUCKS.

Onward.

Rachel

sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your question XX. I have had a number of different plateaus through my weight loss and body comp changes over the last 7 months, some lasting a week and others lasting roughly a month. There are a number of different 'tricks' that I have employed to help me break through these plateaus, all of which have been summarized by Mark @ marksdailyapple.com here (the comments have some strong recommendations as well):

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/weight-loss-plateau/

I am sleeping a lot more now too, not only to aid weight loss, but more importantly to properly recover. I have increased the efficiency of my recovery time over the last few months, and have been able to effectively train 4-5 days at CF and incorporate 2-3 of CFE inspired endurance training to the mix (the military has this thing for running...) without feeling as if I am overtraining. It took a good while to work up to, but I listened (and still listen actively) to what my body is telling me, if it tells me to rest, I rest.

PS - I also wanted to re-clarify something in my original post. I was re-reading through the tangent that I wrote about training intensity, and there was something hugely important that I omitted and thought I should clarify. Bringing a new level of intensity to our workout is very important, especially if we want to increase our performance, strength, speed and breakdown of personal fatigue barriers. But, we should NEVER sacrifice our form in a movement for speed, as we all know that when we become fatigued our form can (and will) go to shit. At this point, our risk for injury is greatly increased. I have been guilty of this on many of occasions, and am lucky I have been limited to only a couple of minor injuries as a result. Always try to remember that proper form is paramount. Form, then a higher level of intensity - both are mutually exclusive and equally important to our training success. Here was a good article that I read that may be of interest to some about training intensity. Look at the date it was written too (ignore the part about dumbell curls, unless, you know, thats your thing :)

http://www.getbig.com/articles/tips.htm

"You must sacrifice laziness, pain avoidance, and pleasure seeking to develop the pain tolerance for hard work. Hard work helps ensure that your sustained efforts will lead you in the direction of achievement. Realistically, you must battle against fear, apathy and pain avoidance to defeat your worst enemy - most likely yourself.

Your mind is the strongest "muscle" in your body. If you believe the molly coddling bromides such as "Don't strain yourself", "You can't do this", and "Pain isn't good", you'll be imprisoned by your fears as long as they remain unconscious and unchallenged, The choice is yours: Be guided by your fears of be self directed by your own free will.

If you're intimidated by the thought of adding more weight to the bar when you can in fact safely handle it, you aren't tapping into your true physical potential. Now is the time to reconsider your options. Remember, to defeat your fears, you must face them with the conviction and courage that you'll ultimately succeed."

The 5th anniversary celebration today was super fun! Thanks to everyone who helped plan the event! Rochelle, I am sure you spent hours, so thank you. :)

Some people were interested in the brownie recipe. Here it is, and enjoy!

CHOCOLATE CHIP BROWNIES
1 (16) oz. jar salted almond butter, smooth roasted
2 eggs
1 cup molasses
1/4 cup agave nectar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup dark chocolate chunks

(I made my own sugar-free chocolate using this recipe: Melt 8 oz. unsweetened chocolate with 3 tablespoons coconut oil and 2-3 spoonfuls of nut butter in a saucepan; once melted add 1 tablespoon maple syrup; stir; pour in tart trays and/or square pan; refrigerate to harden. Chop up for use in brownie recipe.)

In a large bowl, blend almond butter with a hand mixer. Blend in eggs, wet ingredients. Blend in cocoa, salt, soda; add in chocolate chips.

Grease a 9x13 glass baking dish; pour batter in; bake at 325 for 35-45 minutes.

There are a lot of Paleo recipes with Bacon which is great. I love it and it's filling. But I think I love it because it has sugar in it. I've been getting the bacon at the New Seasons meat counter. Once I got regular bacon which had brown sugar in it, then I got pepper bacon and it also said it had brown sugar. I should have asked the meat guys there but I didn't, so I'm putting it out to all of you out there.

Eric, thank you for sharing and explaining it so well!

Curiously, if you don't mind sharing details of your transformation, at what weight did you plateau? And where are you now with sleeping more and working out less? :)

Rochelle asked if I would post something about this, as she has been getting questions about this topic regularly. She has been there with me from the infancy of my crossfit training, and saw me when i weighed 305 pounds and finished my initial baseline at 13:00+ minutes on 0 day.

Needless to say I have had my bouts with fat-loss plateauing, over-training and lack of progress - all of which are disheartening. There is a specific moment of clarity that I can point to in the seven months since that humbling day with Rochelle last August that has lead me to some rather remarkable fat loss, strength, endurance, and flexability gains. It involved overtraining and learning how to sense it creeping up, prevent it, and how to deal with it once I crossed the line into it.

/tangent - First and foremost, I think everyone should keep in mind that in order to fully realize your abilities and potential, you have to muster the initiative and foster the mindset that everyday you show up to workout you will be giving YOUR 100% effort - in and out of the gym. Convince yourself that quitting and taking a break on a WOD is not an option. Not only will this slowly breakdown fatigue barriers you have mentally and increase your WOD times, but it will (more importantly) increase the effectiveness of your training and the complex movement there within it. I will get more into this specifically at the end. /end tangent

I came to Scott and XX a few months into my training for help. I was frustrated because I hit a fat loss wall, and had become stagnant for a few weeks - I felt lost and demoralized. I was (and still am) eating 90% palio (cottage cheese: super simple, low carb, cheap protien), and I was training hard 3-4 times a week with a 2 or so mile run sprinkled in a couple times a week on off days. First thing that XX asked me was if I was taking Fish Oil, and how much EPA/DHA was I taking p/day. I was rougly taking .5g p/day. He told me to get a better concenrated form (carlson's lemon flavored = win) and dramatically increase the amount i was taking. Not sure what the weight:grams p/day ratio was, but he recommended that I take 10g p/day of EPA+DHA. Next Scott addressed my eating, and made sure that I was eating ENOUGH. Someone else can get more detailed into this if they want, but listen to your body and make sure that you are eating when your hungry, but just to the level where you do not feel hunger anyore (try never ever to stuff yourself, and eat good foods; naturally).

What I was asked next was the key. They asked me how I was feeling. Was I feeling stressed? Check. Was I tired, and felt less motivated? Check. Was I fatigued? Check. I had let my goals and ego get ahead of me; I had ventured over that invisible line that we ignore - I entered the realm of overtraining. That bizzaro world where your workouts produce negative results, and all of the nasty aforementioned side effects above that tend to piss off our significant others. A place where all of the good things that come from the a strict diet and excercise are ignored, because your body has set off the emergency alarm, shot your cortisol levels through the roof, stopped utilizing the protiens you are digesting in mass quantities (of course you are, right?) to efficiently rebuild broken down muscles. Im sure there are dozens of other jobs that your stressed out, emergency mode body are not doing during this state of being, (someone with more info please enlighten us) but human biology has never been one of my strong suits.

The advice on how to address this was simple. So simple that I thought he was kidding. SLEEP when in overtrain mode and caution when nearing it.

Cut out any additional training that you are doing outside of CF and invest that time into doing something that your body is so desperately desiring. SLEEP and reasses your training! Your body will get MORE out of the time you spend for 2 hours curled up nice and cozy in your bed than it did with you ran the 5 miles on your off day when you felt like you were cheating yourself. If you are thinking the same thing I did, then you are saying, "BS, more hard work = results". If that is how you feel, then up your intensity with the 3-4 days per week at CF. Add more volume in slow increments. Maybe add another day to your CF schedule and test it for 2 weeks. after that 2 weeks take an inventory of how you are feeling and adjust. Right now I am CF'ing 5 days a week and I have incorporated 2-3 days a week on top of that to endurance training for the Ranger school that I will be attending in roughly 16 months. But if I feel that I may be cozying up to that line dividing productive training and overtraining; I back off and readjust. I have been on this current training regiment for over 2 weeks, and I have yet to feel fatigued, stressed or lacking motivation and focus.

We all need to start listening to our bodies more. Remember, we are doing this on our free time. We arnt going to practice like we did in high school and college where overtraining was just the nature of the beast, or doing mandatory training. We are training and eating the most efficient and effective way that we can for whatever goals we are working towards.

More does not equal better. Hope this helps some of you :)

One of the best breakfasts I have had. Shredded Zucchini (in a food processor) pepper bacon, Tasso (from LaurelHurst Market), ham. Cook the bacon for about 5 mins add the zucchini cook for another 5 min, add the tasso and the ham cover and cook 10 min. Remove lid to allow some of the water to evaporate and enjoy. KID friendly recipe.
