Preparation for Crossfit Classes

Movement Pack
- 4 personal 1-on-1 training sessions focused on teaching you the movements fundamental to CrossFit Portland (i.e. push up, sit up, squat, overhead squat, push press, deadlift, clean) and introducing you to the intensity and structure of workouts.

Classes can seem very intimidating at first. There are many different movements to learn and the workouts are intense. We understand your concerns and we want to help you prepare and feel ready to join the group classes.

Weight Loss

We have clients who work with us to lose and reach their weight goals. We educate clients on the pivotal role nutrition plays in short term weight loss and long term weight control. What you eat will be a more important determinant of how successful you are losing weight and keeping the weight off. Even more important than weight loss, we educate on the long term health implications of the food choices you make in regards to the the development of chronic health conditions. Check out this excerpt from Scott Hagnas’s nutrition lecture.

We also shift the focus from just losing weight to gaining new abilities like doing a pull up, push up, and back squatting your body weight. Few achievements give a bigger boost of confidence than getting your first pull-up! If you aspire to achieve these abilities and work hard with us, the weight loss will take care of itself.

Sports Performance Training

Back in 1998, I was a student athletic trainer for the University of Illinois. I had the rare opportunity to work with collegiate athletes and see what the next level did for performance training. The training space was a big open space, space to run & jump, 150′ of pull up bars, and no machines. The sprinters were dynamically warming up with mobility drills and then they loaded a lifting bar with big rubber weights . The sprinter proceeded to lift the weight to her shoulders from the ground in one explosive movement, and then dropped it back down. Repeat. This track scene was the exact opposite of the university’s fitness facility that thousands of students used everyday, frozen in their respective fitness machines, working one joint at a time.

Which training method makes more sense to you? Why do we “train” for our sport and not execute the fundamental movements that are evidence-based to improve our bodies abilities to produce force?

At CrossFit Portland, our training facility is about open spaces and executing the fundamental methods found in collegiate and professional strength and conditioning facilities. We can help train for a wide range of sports, from fighting to Ultimate Frisbee. Whatever your sport, we want to learn about it, analyze it, and improve your physical capacity for it. We use Olympic lifting, old school strength training, nutrition, tumbling, agility, plyometrics, sprinting, and a curiosity for “keep it simple” techniques that produce results. If you take your sport and training seriously, we look forward to working hard with you to reach your physical potential.
